Their eyes held for long moments, and then Cody nodded, oblivious to diner’s renewed interest in their quiet, intense conversation. “Okay.” He blew out a long breath. “Okay, but Luke, I know that there’s somethin’ you’re not sharin’. You said so yourself. Please. Don’t you think it’s time to tell me what it is? What are you and the others so scared of?”

And just like that, Luke’s expression went from open and honest to closed off and tense. “We’re not scared of anything.” He looked away from Cody, muttering angrily, “There’s nothin’ else to say to you, Cody. Nothin’ else you need to know.”

Cody clenched his fists, thought longingly of his handcuffs again, and weighed the probability of Jeannie letting him slap them on Luke and drag him out without beaning him on the head with a skillet and possibly a rolling pin. He reluctantly concluded that he wouldn’t put it past her and ground out bitterly, “Gotta go. Speak to you later. You’d better call Mike. We’ll be wantin’ you to come down and give a formal statement later about your whereabouts for last night. Just a formality, though.”

“Right.” Luke nodded and refused to meet his eyes. “Will do.”

Cody hesitated for another few seconds and then nodded. “Okay. Later.” He stepped back, nodding again to Jeannie. “Bye. Sorry again for the trouble.”

Jeannie, eyes darting between Cody and Luke, nodded back. “No trouble. You boys come back later for some lunch, y’hear? On the house.”

Cody smiled, shot one last look back at Luke, and then turned for the door. “You bet.”
